Adventures in Plywood

Over the holidays some progress has been made on the architectural structures for which the game interface and the winery equipment will either be contained or attached. Primary goals at this point (the ‘Detailed Design’ phase) have been to examine massing, functional sequence and scale. As such, these structures are currently untextured, an exercise to follow in the ‘Construction Details phase’ of the project.

The first image above is an annotated overall summary of the structures that now appear on the island.

A central idea behind the placement of these elements is that upon first appearing on the island visitors are afforded an overview of the entire process, including an axial view to the first three stations and beyond, into the cellar, the finished bottles in the rack, and the ocean in the distance. Hopefully this helps to reinforce the visitors innate sense of navigation and wayfinding through the game. The intro point will also be a hub to access an event stage and wedding arch by moving paralell through the vine rows to reach these locations. The rezzing area will also contain a scale model overview of the RL winery.

Each of the three vertical piers will form the entrance to an ancilliary attached platform containing the winery equipment for each and related signage/photos for the wine game. The green prims are construction guides for the tasting room and will be removed when complete.

The second image above is of the cellar interior. A particular area where the acutal construction has informed the original sketch ideas has been the expression of the cellar roof, which in response to the relative imprecision afforded by the terraforming process has been expressed as a vegetated plane supported by structure atop the excavated area. The floor of the cellar has also been tiered, creating separate platforms for the barreling, blending, and bottling areas that respond and reinforce a gravity fed process.

The final image is of the cellar exterior, illustrating ideas behind the structural logic of the cellar and the rack wall alongside which the visitor ascends a continuous wood ramp from the bottling station up to the tasting room.
